Shinyribs - “Trouble, Trouble”
Directed by Ashton Guy
Trouble come atcha / 100 miles an hour / but Trouble just wants to pass
Trouble don’t Slow down in a curve/ but trouble runs out of gas…
A 3.5 minute tale on the impermanence of strife. I guess many of us share anxiety over innumerable and fleeting human catastrophes? Pause to shake the snakes off. Rip up poisonous magazines. Ask for forgiveness. Do a bird dance with your inner child. Close your eyes and clean out your thoughts. Trouble’s a single compartment on the ferris wheel of life in constant rotation.
Shinyribs’ first music video was my first music video, too. We started working together on album art and merch designs a few years earlier and really hit it off. The idea I pitched to Kevin initially was an all-muppets dance video for the song “Red Quasar” off Okra Candy, but somehow we got here instead. Mr. Russell loves muppets too, but he was about to drop his fourth album and said it made more sense to visualize a new track to hype that release. He sent along the new batch of secret songs and I listened over and over and over, coming back to “Trouble, Trouble.”
There weren’t any muppets dancing in my head to this one, though. I saw blue sky and dancers in red turtlenecks; I saw the golden sun and the snakes in the hay and the kids dancing and the purple suit. The band was playing on public access TV inside a cartoon. Kevin’s inner child had a pony tail.
He said to go for it, so we called the folks. It came together through the generous, angelic efforts and star qualities of exceptional people on a very long day. From writing the script alone in my studio, to dance rehearsals at Lory’s house, decorating the sky with Jet and Gent, framing each shot with Brian, and editing the footage in a fancy 6th Street office with Justin, the whole process was a surrealist honor and a pleasure, concluding in a surprise screening at the historic Gruene Hall that I will never forget.
You need to work and laugh with everyone involved in the making of this video, too. Jot down their names, act quickly.
